What is the Comprehensive Database of Archaeological Site Reports in Japan?
The “Comprehensive Database of Archaeological Site Reports in Japan” is an electronic archive in which every report on excavation survey of buried cultural properties in Japan has been digitized for Internet browsing and searching. This database is operated by the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (a member organization of the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage) by taking over the Archaeological Reports Repository System with its contents built by the Project on Repository of Archaeological Reports in Japan.
Generally, despite their high values as academic resources, such reports have been distributed within a quite restricted range and are rather difficult for public readers to use. Accordingly, by publishing them on the Internet, the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties aims to create digital environments easily and readily available to anyone who wishes to use the database for research and study.
About Project on Repository of Archaeological Reports in Japan
This project was achieved during the five years from 2008 to 2012 through the cooperation of 21 national universities of Japan on the commission of the National Institute of Informatics as a CSI (Cyber Science Infrastructure) renovation program. Finally, during the five-year commission period, we have been able to digitized nearly 14,000 excavation reports mainly through the Grant-in-Aid for Publication of Scientific Research Results.
